Initiating Broad Changes in Military Pain Control

Since that landmark case, Buckenmaier and his tri-service MARAA colleagues have performed the blocks on hundreds of wounded soldiers, with great success. They're also teaching the technique to resident anesthesiologists and adding it to the repertoire of trained anesthesiologists. Buckenmaier travels extensively, lecturing about regional anesthesia and conducting teaching labs.

ARAPMI is busy on a number of other fronts, as well. It established the first and only DoD fellowship in regional anesthesia through USU. MARAA has created and implemented an electronic database to track regional anesthesia patients internationally, in part so that patients' detailed pain-specific medical records can travel with them. The database—the only one of its kind—also serves as a quality improvement surveillance tool.

The groundbreaking efforts of Buckenmaier and his team, which are funded through the John P. Murtha Neuroscience and Pain Institute, have not gone unnoticed. The group's work in general, and Buckenmaier in particular, have been recognized by several high-profile media outlets, including WIRED magazine, NPR and an ABC News special report, for which Buckenmaier was interviewed.
